I have several posts on the art of Local business SEO, but I can add a couple of new tips here. The beauty of LOCAL is the word local. Any site which exists within your local area, such as an online news letter, an online blog with a local address, online newspapers, are great places to go get a direct link to your business website! Notice, I am discussing links here, not citation sites, where only the mention of your business name, address, phone number or email address counts. If you have a local classified ad site, place a small business advertising ad into it to get that link. Focus local, local did I say local links?

Now, I ask you, if you are wanting to purchase a new mega wide screen TV, and you are in your car with a mobile phone, trying to find a location to purchase one and a website for a retail TV store opens on your mobile phone and you can only see a tiny part of the website without both horizontal and vertical scrolling, are you going to stay on that site to try to find the street address? I wouldn't, I want my providers to make life ease for me and provide that information in mobile format, complete with a click to call button!

Local Business SEO is all about getting the Places slots on page one of a SERP. These are extremely important, as at least on Google, they appear ahead, or above the organic listings. They are so important, that they can replace the need to obtain great page one organic listings, saving lots of time and money.
Citations are defined as mentions of your business name and address on other web pages. These "mentions" are important to the search engines even if there is no link to your website. Mention of your business address and name in a classified ad are also citations.
Online yellow pages directory where your business is listed would also be a form of a citation. Citations also arise from a local chamber of commerce, or a local business association where your business information can be found, even if they are not linking to your website. Web references is a synonym for citations.
Citations are a key component of the ranking algorithms of the major search engines. Other factors being equal, businesses with a greater number of citations will probably rank higher than businesses with fewer citations. This is important, as you want your website to be in the top 10 places, so that it appears ON the page, not as a continuation of the Places websites.
As I have written before, it is important to be very careful to insure that the very same, or EXACT business contact information is used uniformly across all citation sites. It is also important, that you first get your search engine places pages in place before you start building the citations.
Also, as I have mentioned many times in the past, you want to build these citation listings very slow, just a few a week. One note of caution, there are several black hat software programs that will do this kind of work for you, making it possible to do them all in a few seconds or minutes. Don't even think about it. This could get your entire website blacklisted on the search engines and it will never be found.

Yes that is the title tag of one of my pages which just happens to be the Lead Capture Page for my GVO Affiliate business. The first phrase before the pipe (|), is Email Marketing Management. If I am able to promote that page to the number one spot on Google, I will be generating ~18,100 hits per month to my website. That is the good part; the bad part is that there are 9070 competing websites that I have to beat out. After the pipe (|) the second phrase; Free Email Leads, has a monthly search volume of 2400 and a competitive base of 9020.
Now, I am going to adopt a two part promotion of this Lead Capture page. I am going to directly Promote the page including its title tag by using articles, blogs, press releases and videos, and I am going to use no competition Niche Market phrases to promote it as well. Each direct promotion has an effort quotient by me of one. I submit one article; I get the benefit of that one article.
Niche Market Phrase Promotion
If I can find Niche Keyword Phrases that have no competition and a volume of at least 250 searches per month, and promote that phrase into the first spot on Google, with a direct link to my Lead Capture Page, then my effort quotient is at least 250. Well let us say that it takes 5 posts to get to the number one spot on Google, and then my effort quotient is 250/5 or 50. The reason for this is that I am getting all of that traffic to my LCP site with much less effort.
I think that is a pretty sweet way to go about it.
Have you heard about Niche Marketing? There is an entire science revolving around the ability to find a Niche in the market, and the science of how to take over that market.
There are many tools and many schools teaching this subject, but it is wide open to anyone who desires to step forward, educate themselves and then practice the subject.
The Lazy Way, but Highly Effective Method
I call this the Money word non competition route. This involves the process of finding Niche market targeted keyword strings which have no or very little competition for the phrase. The requirements are three fold; (1), the keywords must be ones that a buyer, defined as a person with his/her credit card in hand is using to search, (2) There must be no or very little websites on the Internet (Google for instance) optimized for those words, and lastly, there needs to be an adequate search volume per month for those keywords to be worthwhile, and I have drawn the line at a minimum of 250 searches per month.
One of the easiest ways to find these words is to use the Google's http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/gtrends/ tool. Type in a two word keyword term, which identifies your Niche. The tool will return up to 200 search terms which contain those two words within the search string. Start at the bottom, click on the graph and try to find the search terms that have under a 1000 competition and 10 or more searches per day for the top position.
For ones having fewer than 10 optimized competitive sites, you should be able to promote them to the top position in Google in a matter of hours.
Now for the Grand Slam find and work 4 of these every day. Now, assume that each one of these keyword strings has a low end delivery of only 10 searches per day. The first day you do 4 phrases that represents a total of 40 searches a day to your site. The next day you do 4 more and viola; do you see what is going to happen?
The Carefully Planed SEO Method
Use the Google adwords tool to find niches that have a competitive level of less than 30,000, and a very high volume of searches per day delivery for the number one position on Google.
Now, use the "The Lazy Way, but Highly Effective Method" to promote that site to the number one spot on Google!!!

The term Portal was coined with the advent of the first search system, Yahoo. Before Yahoo we used software called Gopher to find things on the Internet. Back then; there was little if any positioning, strategies or real marketing going on except for the usage of spam. As we all know, spam sucks, doesn't work and even if it did, is totally unethical. In fact the whole leads business of producing or buying leads and selling and reselling them in my professional opinion is just as despicable as slavery was not so long ago! The practice of selling people's private and personal information is the root cause of the three sins of marketing. Spam, telemarketing and unsolicited faxes.
So what does this have to do with Traffic Portals? Well, nothing and everything. Portals are sites like Yahoo that build repeat visits and loyal users to their service. In so doing they can sell exposure to their visitors to advertisers in the form of banners, ads in their mailings, etc. Another thing that Yahoo does that infuriates me, is they also sell their subscribers' info, etc. as leads to anyone and everyone that wants to purchase them. But that is not my point. It just infuriates me.
